Are you worried about termites and the damage they can do to your NYC home? Read this and find out where they’re most likely to be lurking!

What are termites?

Termites are members of the order Isoptera, which is comprised of small insects that eat wood. They create their homes by eating cellulose fibers in dead trees and require a moist environment for survival. They will eat the wood in some form or they will eat any softer woods such as pine and spruce.

Termites are often found in the woods of New York, but can also be found in some hotels and residential buildings, and private homes, usually in the water-damaged areas. Anywhere there is standing water, there’s a potential for termites to live.

NYC Termite Damage

Your house can be heavily damaged by termites, causing structural problems and furniture damage. Unless the building is old and crumbling (which many homes in NYC are), they can be hard to notice until it’s too late. But this is why termite inspections in NYC are so valuable, you can catch them before the burden to repair damages and the cost of removal and renovation is too high. A good inspector knows not just where to look (moist dark place) but also when to look (like an annual inspection or before buying or selling a home).

Signs you need an inspection

There are some tell-tale signs that you might have an infestation, such as the presence of termite droppings so if you find these in your house, it could mean that there is a colony living somewhere inside. They are often found on window sills, door frames, and along baseboards, and the ChutePlus inspectors check all of these places. But because they are so small they enter from the outside and eat away at the wood from the inside out, which is why it is hard to see them until after you have a full blown infestation.

Termite droppings are similar to salt and pepper, but black instead of white. They are about 1/8th of an inch long. If you notice them in your house, it’s worth hiring a termite inspection company in NYC for peace of mind.
